Sir Alex Ferguson has already given his verdict on Mauricio Pochettino, who has been linked with the Manchester United job.

Pochettino has left Chelsea by mutual consent after a season review meeting on Monday despite losing just once in his last 15 Premier League matches.

And the Argentine might find himself in a new post quite quickly, having been linked with Erik ten Hag‘s job at United.

The Dutchman could find himself out of employment after the FA Cup final after a disappointing season with Sir Jim Ratcliffe already making sweeping changes at the club.

As a leading figure at Old Trafford, getting a seal of approval from legendary boss Ferguson is important for any prospective coach at United.

Fortunately for Pochettino, the now-former Chelsea coach has already received a thumbs-up from Fergie.

When Sir Alex was in charge of United and Pochettino at Tottenham in April 2016, the Scotsman said: “Well the manager has been fantastic.

“They have a bad record of managers, there is no doubt about that. They have had so many over the years, but this lad has composure.

“You never see him ruffled and the way his team play is a testimony to the work he is doing.

“The most important thing for English football is how many English and young players are in his team.

“He understands the advantage of playing young people. They won’t let you down and they have been fantastic.

“[Dele] Alli, [Harry] Kane, [Ryan] Mason, [Danny] Rose, [Eric] Dier, all English players. [Kyle] Walker, the right back , although he has been there for a bit longer.”

A year before, Tottenham MP David Lammy opened up on a conversation with Sir Alex where he said: “About six weeks ago, I sat next to Sir Alex Ferguson at a dinner in support of grassroots football abroad.

“He said to me, ‘I think you guys have got the best manager in the Premier League.’ Alex Ferguson said that.”

Pochettino has long been linked with the United job, dating back to 2016 when he was pictured leaving lunch with Ferguson, where he admitted he was in dreamland.

“If you know Sir Alex Ferguson, he is a person we can all learn from because he has a fantastic history about football and about life. For me, it was a dream come true,” he said.

“When I was young, when I started my career as a manager, he was always my inspiration, my reference and when you can share two hours with a person who, for me, was the greatest manager in the world, the history of football, you can only enjoy.

“It was difficult because I wanted to stop time but it was impossible. It was fantastic.”

United have had a dismal campaign and have finished in their worst position since Ferguson left in 2013, though they could still finish the season with silverware when they face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday, which has already seen disruption.
