We’ve all had ‘What If’ moments in football but some could come true if Manchester City have some of their Premier League titles stripped.

The reigning champions have been charged with more than 100 breaches of financial rules and an independent commission has been set up to determine whether they are guilty or not.

If the Premier League’s charges are upheld, it could have a devastating effect on the club – who won the league three times during the 2009-2018 period that has been flagged.

One of the possible punishments is that they will have their titles stripped, though whoever finished second that year would not receive the prize instead.

A similar situation happened in Serie A with Juventus in 2004/05 and 2005/06 when they were found guilty of match-fixing. Those campaigns are classed as having no victors at all.

But how would Premier League history look if City’s titles were to be passed down to the runners-up? talkSPORT.com takes a look.

2011/12: New title winners – Manchester United

It’s arguable the most dramatic moment in Premier League history but Sergio Aguero’s goal against Queens Park Rangers would now count for nothing, with Manchester United awarded the title instead.

City beat QPR 3-2 on the final day of the season with two goals in injury time that saw them leapfrog United on goal difference, who had already beaten Sunderland and were awaiting full-time at the Etihad.

Sir Alex Ferguson, in his penultimate campaign as Red Devils boss, would have won his 13th Premier League title a year earlier instead – going on to lift his 14th the following season before retiring.

Meanwhile, the win would take Phil Jones to two winners’ medals too.

2013/14: New title winners – Liverpool

Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip against Chelsea would have had no impact on the title race and he would have finally got his hands on the trophy he desired most.

City ended up pipping Liverpool to the title that year by two points after the Reds capitulated at Chelsea and Crystal Palace, where they were three goals up with 11 minutes to go before drawing 3-3.

Manuel Pellegrini was in charge of the Etihad outfit at the time and he became the first non-European manager to win the Premier League when his side beat West Ham on the final day of the season.

That accolade would now go to another man – although it’s unlikely it will be Jesse Marsch anytime soon.

2017/18: New title winners – Manchester United

Man City’s third title under contention came in the 2017/18 campaign and saw them branded the ‘Centurions’ season as they managed 100 points – a top-flight first.

They won the Premier League by 19 points with Man United meandering home in second place and it was never truly a title race as City steamrolled the rest of the division – winning a record 32 games.

It was Pep Guardiola’s first title as City manager and he beat his old foe Jose Mourinho to the trophy.

But the wily Portuguese coach could have lifted his fourth title having won three with Chelsea over two spells, a fact that the current AS Roma boss will surely let someone know in the near future.

Guardiola’s Centurions blew Mourinho’s United out of the title race in 2018

That would also take United’s total number of English titles to 22 while Liverpool would have won 20, giving the Red Devils some breathing room as the two biggest clubs continue to tussle it out for domination.

City would lose three of their six Premier League titles, seeing Chelsea on three, back on level terms..

The club only having their titles stripped might potentially be a best-case scenario if they are found guilty of breaching financial rules.

Possible punishments include relegation from the Premier League, a points deduction, and a hefty fine to other clubs in the top-tier.

City have alleged to have broken a number of financial rules

However, the club have insisted that they are surprised by the charges and have welcomed the review into their financial dealings.

A statement from City read: “Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.

“The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.

“As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
