Thomas Tuchel has said ‘luck was on Liverpool’s side’ as Chelsea suffered a second cup final defeat in four months to the Reds, but the Blues lack of trophies has been labelled ‘disgraceful’.

Chelsea lost the FA Cup final to Liverpool on penalties at Wembley in a repeat of their Carabao Cup heartbreak back in February.

On both occasions the games were goalless after extra time, needing penalties to settle the score.

And Jurgen Klopp’s side prevailed each time, ending a tricky season for Chelsea on and off the field on a low note.

Tuchel led his side to UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup titles thanks to their Champions League success last season, but was unable to add to that tally domestically.

Meanwhile the impending departure of sanctioned owner Roman Abramovich has been a massive distraction, but Tuchel had a different cause for their gutting loss in the capital.

He told talkSPORT: “We play now 240 minutes of football with Liverpool and it’s 0-0 so we need to find a decision with penalties again, and again we were second best, and it hurts a lot.

“They can do these kind of performances three times a week and we cannot at the moment, we can do it against them and we can do it in peaks but this is where the gap is, it has nothing to do with today, luck is on their side this season and we accept it.”

It’s easy to feel some sympathy for Tuchel considering how close his team came in both domestic competitions, but the German was still left frustrated with a lack of killer’s instinct.

Calling his side ‘underdogs’ Tuchel felt that despite injuries, the trophy was there to be won, if only his players could take it.

He said: “I think it was enough to take this trophy and some point you have to take it, they will not give it to you.

“We played with a lot of injury concerns and it was a little bit difficult in the last weeks so I think we played from the role as an underdog.

“Hold them down to a minimum and had the chances to take it, to get into their head, to have this one goal that makes things awkward for them and even more difficult but we missed them, we missed them and 240 minutes of goalless draw.

But the Blues boss was reminded how much he spent last summer

Former Premier League striker and talkSPORT pundit, Gabby Agbonlahor, didn’t have too much sympathy for Tuchel though, reminding him he broke the club’s transfer record last summer.

Agbonlahor explained: “The squad of players they’ve got, yes there’s things off the field but I’ve played the game, that doesn’t affect you when you’re playing the game, you put your performances in.

“Bringing in Lukaku for 90million and being 19 points off of Manchester City, that’s disgraceful for Chelsea football club with that amount of talented players in their squad.

“Look at their bench, [Hakim] Ziyech, [Timo] Werner, [Ruben] Loftus-Cheek, [Ross] Barkley, [Callum] Hudson-Odoi, Saul [Niguez], it goes on doesn’t it.

“19 points behind the leaders, not acceptable.

“Chelsea fans would not be as harsh on the manager if they went and won a cup, but for me it’s a poor season with Chelsea’s standards”
