A touchline clash broke out between Liverpool and Newcastle after the Reds snatched a 2-1 victory at the death.

Fabio Carvalho struck in the eighth minute of additional time, with only five added on, sending the Liverpool bench into a frenzy.

It completed a dramatic comeback for the hosts after Magpies debutant Alexander Isak opened the scoring for the visitors and had a second marginally ruled out for offside.

Roberto Firmino equalised and Carvalho broke Toon hearts, before unsavoury scenes erupted on the sidelines.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp stayed in his technical area, but a number of his coaching staff appeared to celebrate in the direction of Newcastle’s bench.

Stadium security were forced to intervene as members of the two benches shouted at each other and had to be kept apart.

It follows an already-infamous touchline scrap between Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte earlier this month.

Unlike that match, there were sporting handshakes between Klopp and his opposite number Eddie Howe at full-time.

The disagreement appeared to stem from the timing of the goal, with Newcastle feeling time was up, after Liverpool had been complaining about time-wasting from their opponents.

When asked about the Magpies’ tactics, Klopp said: “The perfect response was to score in the 98th minute. Nothing more to say.”

Meanwhile, Howe said: “When you’re in the lead here, naturally it becomes a different game. We had to withstand pressure, we had to defend very, very well and we did for big periods – I don’t really remember them having too many clear-cut chances.

“Yes, they had chances, they had long shots, but I thought we defended really well. The last goal was a heartbreaker, really, for us.”

Reacting on the Sports Bar, ex-Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara shared Newcastle’s frustration over the additional time.

He said: “It’s a big-club thing. Just like Sir Alex Ferguson always gets extra-time, Liverpool get it. It’s Klopp time!

“The corner never should’ve happened, there were five minutes added on, Nick Pope went down for 30 seconds, and the referee played eight.”

However, ex-Chelsea defender Jason Cundy insisted Newcastle only had themselves to blame.

“Here’s who you blame,” he said. “You blame the defence and the players who don’t deal with the set-piece.”
