Elderly Passenger Removed from Flight After Threatening to Slap Air Hostess, Over Seat Change

An elderly passenger was removed from a Nigerian domestic flight earlier today after threatening to slap an air hostess who attempted to reassign his seat near the aircraft’s exit door, according to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The incident, which unfolded at an unspecified Nigerian airport, prompted the pilot to refuse to operate the flight until the passenger was deplaned, citing safety concerns.Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, shared details of the altercation on social media, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safety and civility in air travel. The elderly man, whose identity was not disclosed, was seated by the exit door when cabin crew requested to reassign his seat, likely due to safety regulations requiring able-bodied passengers in such areas to assist in emergencies. The passenger “vehemently declined” the request, despite explanations, and twice threatened to physically assault the hostess. The situation escalated quickly, leading the pilot to involve airport security, including Air Force personnel, to remove the passenger. NCAA Consumer Protection Officers were called in to mediate and deescalate the situation. The passenger was informed of the severity of his actions, particularly the threats of violence, which violated aviation safety protocols. “The pilot insisted on not flying the passenger for safety reasons,” Achimugu stated. After being escorted back to the terminal, the passenger reportedly calmed down and apologized for his behavior. NCAA officials confirmed that he would be permitted to board a later evening flight, provided no further issues arise. Achimugu stressed that threats of violence against cabin crew are unacceptable and urged passengers to resolve grievances through official channels. “If you are not satisfied with the quality of service you have received, kindly report to the NCAA Consumer Protection Department via http://cpd.ncaa.gov.ng, and a resolution will be reached,” he wrote. He also highlighted the shared responsibility of passengers and crew to maintain a safe and respectful environment onboard. The NCAA’s swift response and the passenger’s eventual apology may help prevent similar occurrences, but the episode serves as a reminder of the need for mutual respect to ensure safe skies for all travelers.
