BOMB hits Kano - Possibly Car Bomb

A suspected car bomb has exploded in the northern Nigerian city of Kano, witnesses have told the AFP news agency.

The blast ripped through a busy road filled with bars in the predominantly Christian area of Sabon Gari, locals said.

The explosion could be heard several miles away, they added.

Police spokesman Musa Majiya said it was too soon to say if there were any casualties.

Witness Abdul Dafar said he saw at least four bodies in the aftermath.

"I heard a loud blast," he said.

"And there was a lot of smoke. Soldiers came in to cordon off the place and ambulances were rushing people to hospital."

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast, but the Islamist group Boko Haram is likely to be blamed.

The group's five-year insurgency against the Nigerian state has killed thousands and the militants have attacked Sabon Gari in the past. SkyNews
