Leicester are being rivalled by Southampton, Newcastle and West Brom as they bid to sign Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles on transfer deadline day.

The versatile 23-year-old is keen to leave the Gunners on loan as he seeks more game time in the second half of the season.

Leicester are understood to be the frontrunners but face competition from Southampton, Newcastle and West Brom.

Maitland-Niles has made just 11 appearances in the Premier League during the 2020/21 campaign but still hopes to win an England place at the rescheduled Euro 2020 this summer.

The 23-year-old also wants to play in his preferred midfield position having been used as a versatile option in north London, often covering in defence and at wing-back during his time in the Arsenal first-team.

He came close to joining Wolves last summer but Arsenal turned down a £15million bid, and Maitland-Niles remains keen on departing the Emirates given his situation under Mikel Arteta has hardly improved.

Arteta remained coy when asked about Maitland-Niles’ future at today’s press conference for tomorrow’s trip to Wolves.

He said: “We have decided [who could leave on loan today] and we are working on it. You will find out before 11pm.

“I don’t know [about Maitland-Niles], I cannot speak about any individual players. What we want to do, the conversations we’ve had, the various reasons… let’s see if we can get something done tonight.

“I cannot talk about any individual players and what our plans are for them for now or the future.”
