Chelsea have hired the former All Blacks mental skills coach, credited with implementing a ‘no d***heads policy’.

Gilbert Enoka has joined the Premier League club on a short-term consultancy basis.

He has been in various roles within the New Zealand rugby union set-up since 2000, spending 15 years as mental skills coach and a further seven as leadership manager.

Enoka is credited with creating a winning culture among the New Zealand team that has made them one of the most revered sports teams around.

Much has also been made of his ‘no d***heads policy’ too.

“A d***head makes everything about them,” Enoka said in 2017. “They are people who put themselves ahead of the team, people who think they’re entitled to things, expect the rules to be different for them, people operating deceitfully in the dark, or being unnecessarily loud about their work.

“The management might not spot these counterproductive behaviours. The players and leaders themselves should call others out for their inflated egos.

“Often teams put up with it because a player has so much talent. We look for early warning signs and wean the big egos out pretty quickly. Our motto is: ‘If you can’t change the people, change the people.’”

Chelsea will be hoping Enoka can, in the short-term, help Graham Potter galvanise a new squad of players and lay the foundations for success.

Owner Todd Boehly has spent more than £600million in transfers since he became owner.
