There are sure to be plenty of twists and turns to come, but Frenkie de Jong looks increasingly like joining Manchester United this summer.

talkSPORT understands the Red Devils are considering a big money move for the Barcelona midfielder this summer.

The Dutchman joined the Catalan club in 2019 in a £65million move from Ajax and they are hoping to recoup at least the money they paid.

A transfer to Old Trafford would also see him reunite with manager Erik ten Hag, who is joining from the Dutch giants in the summer.

Ten Hag helped develop him into one of the most coveted young midfielders in world football, winning a league and cup double in 2018/19 and reaching the Champions League semi-final.

It is perhaps a shock that Barcelona want to sell the midfielder as he was touted as the heir apparent to the likes of Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

Although De Jong himself was not too fond of those comparisons.

“I don’t want to be compared with those players,” he told Barca TV.

“It’s the perfect club for a midfielder. They hold onto the ball well, they control the play, it suits me perfectly.”

Barca was his dream move and now looks like that dream has not quite worked out and a move to the Premier League beckons.

He very nearly moved to an English club when he left Ajax and spoke about how Arsenal and Man City were in the running alongside Paris Saint-Germain.

De Jong told Voetbal International: “In my mind I have had the following list for a long time: Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona, call it the Marc Overmars route.

“But then again, if you can go directly to Barcelona, then you are right where you want to be. Faster than you ever dared to dream.”

That may have been his long-term ambition, but when he was leaving the Dutch club the Gunners would not have been an attractive prospect.

Some of the best clubs in Europe were also after his signature.

“If it had not been Barca, I find it hard to say it now, it would have been PSG or City,” De Jong told El Periodico .

Asked whether PSG or City could have offered him more money than Barca, De Jong replied: “It is not right to talk about [money].

“Money was not my business. Money was never discussed in the meeting room with me. It was a matter for my agent.

“The most important thing was the way [Barcelona] played and how they saw me, what plans they had for me.

“When [Barcelona] told me they saw me playing here, that they thought about this and that, then they really convinced me.

“I talked with my family and my agent and we chose Barca. Then my agent came here to negotiate.”
