It’s been hard to miss Marcus Rashford’s new goal celebration, which he began after going on that outrageous scoring run after the World Cup.

But it turns out the Manchester United ace wasn’t the first player to do what is now his trademark pose. That’s what Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Ruben Neves seems to be suggesting, anyway.

Man United forward Rashford scored in seven games in a row following his return from the 2022 World Cup, with his goal tally for the season now sitting at 19 goals in 32 appearances.

And to celebrate his impressive form, every time the ball has hit the back of the net, the 25-year-old has stood still, pointed his index finger to his temple, and closed his eyes.

Rashford hasn’t explained the meaning behind his new pose yet, but fans have made guesses that it’s in reference to his mental health struggles, which he opened up about last season.

But it appears that the Man United star didn’t come up with the celebration, with Neves seeming to suggest it was actually him that did it first.

The Portuguese star rounded off Wolves’ impressive win over underperformers Liverpool, putting his side 3-0 up with 19 minutes to go.

And as he ran to celebrate, Neves reacted in the same way Rashford did in his goal against Crystal Palace in their 2-1 win on Saturday.

After he celebrated with his teammates, footage posted on social media shows Neves pointing to himself and then at the celebration he was doing, appearing to suggest it was him that started Rashford’s trend.

Wolves then shared an image on Twitter of Neves celebrating the third goal of the game and wrote: “Nobody does it better.”

Neves hasn’t scored for Wolves since Rashford’s impressive run began, with his last goal coming in the 3-2 loss to Brighton in early November.

So it could be the case that the 25-year-old has been waiting for his moment in the spotlight to make his case that he actually began the trend.

Wolves had gone 2-0 up against visitors Liverpool after just 12 minutes thanks to an own goal from Joel Matip and a strike from defender Craig Dawson on his debut.

Then, Neves – who had been left unmarked – finished the job in the second half, slotting Adama Traore’s cut back past Alisson, as Julen Lopetegui dumped further woe onto Jurgen Klopp.

The win lifts Wolves out of the Premier League relegation places and into 15th, whilst Liverpool remain in 10th.
