England will officially get their Euro 2024 campaign underway this week as they seek a first win in Italy in over 60 years.

The Three Lions suffered an agonising penalty shootout defeat to the Azzurri in the final of the last Euros on home soil in 2021.

Gareth Southgate was hoping to take his side one step further at the World Cup, before a humbling quarter-final exit to runners up France.

England’s first match since Qatar will arguably be their toughest in their qualifying group as they face defending champions Italy.

Roberto Mancini’s men failed to capitalise on their Euro triumph by missing out on the World Cup but haven’t lost to England since 2012.

Italy vs England: What has been said?

Southgate told talkSPORT he considered his future as England boss as media criticism could have started affecting the players.

When asked how hard that decision was to continue in charge, he said: “Not so difficult, my bigger concerns were before Qatar really, leading into the tournament.

“We’d had a difficult summer, we’d had a lot of criticism leading from the Euro final, my worry wasn’t the criticism because that’s part and parcel of the job, but my worry was that we could have been at a point where it started to affect the performance of the team.

“I’ve seen scenarios where because people are so desperate for the manager to be out they’d almost be fairly happy for the team to lose so he goes, so that bothered me ahead of Qatar.

“Would I need to say ‘we’re going to move on here’ and it’s time for somebody else so we had a free hit ahead of the tournament?”
