Rory McIlroy believes the ‘stars are aligning’ ahead of the PGA Championship following an emphatic win at Wells Fargo.

The Irish star stormed to a five-shot victory at Quail Hollow as he overturned a one-shot deficit to Xander Schauffele.

That win, alongside his victory with Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event, has left the 35-year-old feeling rather positive ahead of a big week at Valhalla Golf Cluv in Kentucky.

Victory in the Wells Fargo Championship – his fourth at the venue – means that McIlroy now has back-to-back wins on the PGA tour.

McIlroy’s last major victory was the PGA Championship at Valhalla in 2014, an honour he won after securing victory at Wells Fargo the week before.

The four-time major winner heads to Valhalla as second-favourite to come out victorious behind Scottie Scheffler.

Hoping for a good omen, McIlroy says that confidence is high as he looks to secure the fifth major of his career.

He said: “I really got some confidence from New Orleans winning with Shane.

“And then coming into this week, at a golf course I’m comfortable at, my golf swing feels a lot more comfortable than it has done.

“Going to a venue [Valhalla] next week where I’ve won, it feels like the stars are aligning a little bit.

“But I have got a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try and beat next week.

“I’m going into the next major of the year feeling really good about myself.”

Scheffler himself is expected to compete at Valhalla after his wife, Meredith, gave birth to their first child.

The 106th edition of the PGA Championship starts on Thursday, May 16 with the best of the action across the talkSPORT network.
